It is the build up to the Christmas holidays and as parents/ carers we are planning to give our children the best gifts. Our preference of gifts differs on our budget, availability and durability. However, above our preference for gifts, the best gift we can give our children regardless of the occasion is the gift of sharing a book together.
What are the benefits?
Books enrich life, creates inspiration, information and imagination.
Books help us understand the world.
Books open new horizons, shows us who we are and who we might be.
Books take us to places we may never visit.
Books introduce us to characters we may never meet.
What are the benefits for children?
Research done in the UK shows that an early start with books helps children to develop the practice, motivation, concentration and attention that are necessary for learning.
Children who are read to, grow to see reading as a pleasurable activity.
Children who have an early introduction to stories, songs and rhymes become confident learners.
Children who enjoy books have high standard of attainment.
Where can I find age appropriate books?
Children’s books are readily available everywhere really. If you live in the UK, your local library is your best option. In addition, most schools have a library where you can borrow books from.
If you have an internet connection, the british council website, the oxford owl @ www.oxfordowl.co.uk. are good. There are e-books you can download from them.
Remember that the best readers are made on their parents/carers laps.
Happy sharing and happy reading!

It is a time to enrich their experiences, extend their vocabulary, experiment with their imagination and expand their creative minds. The question is how? Enrich their experiences: Most city centres

Lovely article, I totally agree with you on the importance of books, and I love receiving books as gifts too 🙂
Thank you Myne. I have read your books and I find them interesting. It is important to share a book with children everyday.
